CONFIGURING BROWSERS FOR AN EXTERNAL VIEWER
If your browser is not listed below, chances are the procedure is similar to the ones listed anyway. Feel free to e-mail me with procedures for other browsers, and I will add them to the list.
Netscape
From the pull-down menus, choose "Options", select "General Preferences", select the "Helpers" tab, and scroll through the "file type" list window until you find the "image/gif" and "image/jpeg" file types. Normally, these are setup to be viewed by the "browser." Highlight the "image/jpeg" type, and then click the "Launch the Application" button in the "Action" section. Then use the "Browse" feature to locate and select the image viewing sofware you'd like to use. A small, fast-loading program is recommended. Once you have setup the "image/jpeg" type, follow the same steps for the "image/gif" file type. Once this is done, whenever you click on a link to a JPEG or GIF file, your external viewer will be launched.
Explorer
Although Explorer allows you to select an external viewer for the GIF and JPEG files types, it will not launch the application. It seems Microsoft felt that nobody would want to use something other than their browser to view images...

Then use the "Browse" feature to locate and select the image viewing sofware you'd like to use, then select the "Ok" button. A small, fast-loading program is recommended. Once you have setup the "image/jpeg" type, follow the same steps for the "image/gif" file type. Once this is done, whenever you click on a link to a JPEG or GIF file, your external viewer will be launched.
Spry mosaic
Although SPRY Mosaic allows you to select an external viewer for the GIF and JPEG files types, it will not launch the application. It continues to view them internally...
